I previously served with the Royal Signals for 9 years before transferring in to the RAPTC and this has helped me understand the complexities of units like 13SR and adjust the management of Physical Development (PD) to what suits the needs of the unit. Even though they are under manned, they have still managed to attend many sporting events. Last year the unit competed in a virtual ‘Race to the Sun’ event in which they were victorious. Despite having very few soldiers the unit has also competed in the 21/22 Cross Country league. Although scraping a team for each meet, SCpl Aspland-Monger managed to herd the cattle and achieve a well-deserved 8th out of 22 Major Units at the end of the season, on top of completing Trailwalker UK.
13SR have hit the ground running and manage to still allow service personnel time away to compete for their Corps, the Army and even England. The regiment may be small in numbers, but their sporting profile is already starting to show promising results.
The last event that 13SR were able to attend before the closing year was Ex MERCURY SNOWRIDER, the Royal Signals Inter Unit Snowboarding competition held in Rauris, Austria. This was an exceptionally well-planned event that held one week of training for all ability groups by Ripstar instructors. After a week, personnel were expected to race the Slalom, Boardercross and Slopestyle events. A well fought competition by all units provided a very speedy, very entertaining few days. Although no personnel were successful in the Open event, 13SR’s Lt Ryan Convery took the Novice group by storm and provided times good enough to compete within the Open. He won the Slalom convincingly by 3 seconds and would have no doubt won the boarder cross if he didn’t break his foot 2 days prior to the event.
The commitment that this small major unit has put into its sporting events, whilst being dispersed all over the UK, is admirable and I look forward to watching this regiment grow over the next few years.
