As I write this article, I am going into my final few months of what has been an enjoyable and challenging post. For the majority of the post the team has been operating in a Covid environment which has undoubtedly been one of the most difficult periods that we have faced. Adaptability has been the key factor in keeping serving personnel both physically and mentally active. It has also been a great opportunity to learn new skills and engage with fellow serving personnel in a different way.
During this year some of the main PD highlights have included the Commander British Forces Gibraltar Cup, Barbarians Challenge (BAWF Event), Armed Forces Day activities, the first essential services 7-a-side football competition, the RSM’s challenge and the Midnight runway fun run.
Commander British Forces Gibraltar Cup competition was contested between the Royal Navy, Army Minor Units, Royal Air Force and the Royal Gibraltar Regiment (RG). The competition consisted of 8 events and It was fantastic to see how competitive sport is one of the most effective ways to grow camaraderie and build trust and loyalty within a team. The RG were the overall winners of an extremely well-contested competition and it was great to finish the event with a SSAFA charity BBQ and beers on the beach.
Gibraltar hosted their first ever Armed Forces Day at the Naval Base in June 21. It was an opportunity for BF Gib to showcase defence’s capabilities on the Rock to the wider public. JPDU staff were on hand to deliver a fantastic range of activities from family trips on the powerboat, SUP boarding activities but the main attraction was the hang tough competition which kept the PTI’s busy throughout the day.
DTC Gymnasium has had a significant amount of investment over the last 12 months. We have seen the arrival of a 10ft FOB locker which is a fantastic outdoor training space that can be utilised all year round. We have also redesigned the main Strength & Conditioning area and installed a new high-performance floor; this has been well received by all DTC gym users.
Gibraltar is a great location and I would highly recommend that if you get an opportunity to serve out here, then go for it. With Spain on your doorstep it is a great chance to travel around the Southern Mediterranean coast and with 300+ days of sunshine guaranteed, you can’t really complain.
