3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery (3 RHA) like many other Units throughout the last 12 months, have encountered an extremely busy period. A recurring consideration for the
PD department has been deliberating the complexities required when delivering PT to those members of the Regiment returning from large periods of inactivity whilst supporting Op RESCRIPT. In addition, supporting the Regiment’s Operational commitments, preparing SP physically and mentally for deployment on Op CABRIT. To meet such commitments, an integral part to ensuring SP are physically prepared for Operations has been the successful transition to the RFT (S), ensuring the training programme is functional and provisions are in place for regular annual testing when required.
Charity events like for many others within the military have been significantly affected by the outbreak of Covid-19, so creativity has become essential in devising plans for PD events to take place, falling in line with the Force Health Protection measures. 3RHA identified the effect the pandemic was having on various charities and the negative impact the cancellation of sporting events was having on fundraising. To support charities with a close affiliation to the UK Armed Forces, Btys within 3RHA managed to organise various charity events to support these organisations. D Bty conducted a charity bike ride across Scotland called the North Coast 500, consisting of a team of 10 people, cycling a day on, day off continuously, to complete a total distance of 500miles within the short space of a week. A team from L Bty walked the length of Hadrian’s wall to raise awareness and money for various charities, and M(HQ) Bty hosted a weightlifting competition with the veteran’s charity Launch Pad. This was to raise awareness and promote the help and treatment they offer to serving members and veterans all over the country.
As restrictions began to be lifted which allowed the resumption of sport, the former SSI, SSgt Sargent led the line by delivering the UK North Athletics Championships; members of 3RHA gym staff worked tirelessly to deliver a successful competition over a 2-day period. Continuing their commitment to supporting regional sport, 3RHA then welcomed competitors to Albermarle Barracks

on 9 Feb 22, hosting UK North Cross-Country League Race 5. Then a mere two weeks later, on 23 Feb 22, 3 RHA hosted the UK North Team and Individual Swimming Championship for the very first time at Richmond Leisure Centre. 11 teams participated in a strongly contested competition, where once again, members of 3RHA gym staff alongside regional RAPTCIs worked tirelessly to deliver a highly successful competition. 3 RHA’s boxing team also got its first competitive run out in 3 years entering the Royal Artillery Corps Championship 2022 held in Larkhill, all members of the team fought with grit and determination and represented the Regiment well, a special mention to Cpl Bates RLC and SSgt Jowers RAPTC for winning the female welterweight and male middleweight categories respectively.
3 RHA now look forward to the restructuring of the Regiment as part of the Integrated Review, meeting the physical and mental challenges presented with versatility, in order to facilitate 3 RHA’s successful transition from a Light Gun Regiment to a Multi Launcher Rocket System (MLRS) Regiment.
