1ST BATTALION THE YORKSHIRE REGIMENT
SSgt (SSI) R Lowe RAPTC
1st Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, situated in Catterick Garrison, has endured a busy year delivering Bn, Bde, and Div exercises around the world. Training has been particularly
problematic due to COVID, adapting to new work environments and schedules however, remaining diligent and operationally effective for the Battalion’s FoE.
Infrastructure uplift
The areas on Alma Lines were limited for a Bn of 600 personnel. Delivering the Army Physical Training System (APTS) with minimal S&C equipment proved difficult. 1 YORKS were fortunate enough to be selected to hold the 4X S&C shelter, which ended up being an S&C hanger. BEAVERFIT was chosen to resurface, uplift, and deliver a facility worthy of effective S&C training.
The grand opening of 8A Strength and Conditioning facility
After months of development we were finally able to open the new facility, just in time, ready for the colder months. 1 YORKS were delighted to host Deputy Commander 1 (UK) Div to the opening. A parade was set up and 1 YORKS drummers delivered an excellent display, giving the facility the opening it deserved. 8A has enhanced the Gym and is a significant investment into the health, wellbeing, and physical fitness of all Service Personnel (SP).
Warrior Games
Implementing sports back into the FoE has proven difficult, with group activities taking a back step during the pandemic. SP began to spend more time doing individual activities and team cohesion was slipping. The 3XX Warrior games was an opportunity to create healthy competition amongst the Coys, as well as progress to represent the Bn in the Div competition. The Coy Competition has seen over 150 SP participate in 4 events. On the day, the Bn HQ won the event narrowly thumping Corruna Coy thanks to some solid deadlifts from the Bn Adjt. The competition saw some impressive individual scores, but more significantly great participation from the Bn. 1 YORKS progressed and advanced to compete on the virtual 3 Div competition, a well-organised event with over 25 units challenging in sync and online. Of the 25 units, 1 YORKS positioned comfortably within the top 10, the competition re-energised group activities and kicked off the Wellington Cup.
The Bn is moving into a new combat space in May 2022 with physical fitness, sports, and health as the main priority. 2022/23 sees new opportunities and deployments for the YORKS as we move into 7 Armoured Bde with a busy sporting FOE. The department’s aim is to continue to enhance the participation, whilst enhancing combat effectiveness.
