MORTARMAN’S MARCH
In early October 2 RIFLES’ Mortar Platoon conducted a charity event for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
The Riflemen decided the challenge would be completed as a “Heavy Carry”. This means the platoon carried full mortar kit for the duration, with an average weight of 40kg per man and chose chose to complete 1 mile every hour for 24 hours. This in itself could be deemed a difficult challenge!
In typical Mortar Platoon fashion, the event started with high spirits even with the 0001 start. The first few miles went past easily with no real drain on the Riflemen. Over the course of the night and into the morning tiredness began to set in and a few of the troops dropped off. However, as the miles started to mount up, we had other members of 2 RIFLES join in, lifting morale and spurring us on. Overall, this was a much harder event than anticipated, with only 18 of the 31 members of the Platoon able to complete every lap.
A total of £3,000 was raised for Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Mortar platoon would like to
thank everyone who
donated and gave their
support throughout the event, with a special thanks to LCpl North who managed
to put it all together.
