Ex NORTHERN BUGLE
Confidence exercises in Loch Morlich
Ex NORTHERN BUGLE was a Type 2 Multi-Activity Adventurous Training (AT) Exercise that hosted 3 RIFLES personnel at Norwegian Lodge in Glenmore, Scotland. The lodge was home for the 3-week package and all participating personnel were able to enjoy some much needed and well-earned training away from operational deployments and commitments. As a multi-activity package, they conducted mountain biking, mountaineering and kayaking over various locations within the Cairngorms National Park and surrounding areas.
The exercise was integral in enhancing the core values and behaviours of our Riflemen with exposure to arduous AT activities in
a controlled environment. It significantly promoted an appreciation for the outdoors, helped develop mental and physical resilience as well as fostering a cohesive team spirit
in order to better prepare for the rigours of operational deployments.
The opportunity afforded all Riflemen the chance and platform to develop leadership
Groups were predominantly novices
skills, enhance physical and mental robustness in the face of adversity and helped to create a cohesive team spirit outside of the day-to-day work environment. The location itself was fantastic and it provided the Bn a central location for which the Cairngorms and nearby landmarks could be explored. Although the weather provided challenges at times, the morale, enthusiasm, and confidence from all Riflemen was commendable.
The 2022 - 2023 football season is well underway with 3 RIFLES once again competing on various fronts. Having won the UK Northern League Division 1 the previous season and being semi-finalists in both
the Army Challenge and Infantry Cup competitions; expectations were high coming into the year.
The team were promoted to the UK Northern League Premier Division and have entered into all available competitions including Army, Infantry and UK Scotland Challenge Cups. In addition, the Battalion team have already secured two pieces of silverware from two available and were Champions in both the Army 6-a-side and UK North 7-a-side tournaments; no easy feat and
a real testament to the strength in depth the Battalion possesses.
The exercise once again provided evidence that Adventurous Training continues to be recognised as an essential form of military training and that individuals are afforded the opportunity to gain, consolidate and enhance skills and behaviours that our military defines itself on.

Due to the recent success, the Battalion continues
to provide a platform for the football team to recognise talent and develop our Riflemen; this has played an integral role in advertising our players Army-wide which has resulted in numerous personnel being selected to represent at Army, Army U23, Corps and representative level.
The Battalion remains competitive in all competitions, with numerous fixtures being played before and immediately after the Christmas period. The main target is to better our positioning from last year and hopefully add numerous accolades to the ever-increasing trophy cabinet.
