I am thrilled to have been selected as Equerry to our Colonel-in-Chief, Her Majesty The Queen Consort.
To say that the experience, thus far,
has been unique and surreal would be a
gross understatement. I was notified of the opportunity while in South Sumatra, with
the Army Surf Team, and three weeks later I found myself attempting to teach our Colonel Commandant how to surf in his office. Only after my efforts to explain the ‘pop up’ did General Patrick reveal that he was no stranger to surfing!
After a secondary interview in Buckingham Palace, the final candidates were presented
to Her Majesty at Clarence House. The final interview was not quite what I had pictured
as we sat in Her Majesty’s study, next to a roaring fire, discussing art and racing - a test of personality, I believe, as all the conceptual and professional probing had been done in the earlier interviews.
The first few months working for our Colonel- in-Chief and representing The Rifles have been a total privilege, and I’m very much looking forward to the forecast of events including, of course, Their Majesties’ Coronation.
Only after my efforts to explain the ‘pop up’ did General Patrick reveal that he was no stranger to surfing!
