Kids Out Watt Bike Charity Challenge
LCpl M Dimau
On 6th Nov 2019 SSgt Firby, LCpl Cacho, and I joined HQ 11 Inf Brigade on the Watt Bike Charity Challenge that was organized by Cpl Boxter (AGC).
The aim was to raise £500 for the charity Kids Out by the 11X (plus) team cycling a total of 320 miles on watt bikes. The charity Kids Out gives disadvantaged children positive experiences to support them becoming future members of our society.
It does this through organizing days out for children, gifting boxes of new toys and many other things to remind children what it is to have fun.
At 1530hrs team Aldershot got changed into our PT kits and headed to the charity event which was happening right opposite our Dental Centre. On arrival we were greeted by Cpl Boxter who handed us free
Kids Out charity t-shirts to wear during our imminent challenge.
We were given hourly slots and our time was from 1600 to 1700 hrs, which I must say was quite tiring having already spent the day at work. However, we pushed ourselves hard at the end as we knew it was for a very good cause, also we knew cakes and biscuits were waiting for us as a reward for our hard work.
I am happy and pleased to say the event raised £551 and rode a total distance of 447 miles, much further than was initially aimed for, which was a great effort by everyone who took part for this worthy cause. I really enjoyed taking part in the event knowing that the money raised could make such a difference to a young person’s life but also, I liked the physical challenge it set me. I hope in the future to do more events like this.

24hr charity spinning event – ABF The Soldiers Charity
Cpl N Atherton, RADC
I chose to support the Army Benevolent Fund Soldiers Charity because they offer support and help to soldiers and veterans. They do this by awarding grants to individuals and families and providing essential funding to around 90 charities and organisations that support the Army family.
When I heard that WO2 Beckett was fundraising for this charity, I felt that I needed to support this. My hope was
that the money raised by doing such an event would go a little way towards the much-needed help that is provided by this charity. I wanted to give something back.
The event took place at the main entrance of Tesco (Meadows, Camberley), it started at 0900 on the 13th of February and ended at 0900 on the 14th of February. Several people volunteered to take part in this event. Time slots were allocated for individuals who volunteered and this was anything between 1hr time slots to 24hrs.
When I got to where the event was

being held, I was handed a lovely ABF red t-shirt which made us all stand out a little bit more. I put on my t-shirt and with a big smile on my face, I took my place on the spinning bike. If you are not used to
a spinning bike, which I wasn’t, that part was definitely a little uncomfortable. So, it began; I started to ride and invited those passing by to come and have a look at what the charity was all about. This not only sparked interest but also bought many donations our way.
It felt amazing to be able to offer some support for this amazing charity; it gave me a sense of pride and even though I only played a small part in this event, the outcome was amazing. Overall the grand total raised was £1010.19.

When asked if I would take part in this 24hrs spinning, I jumped at the chance.
Not only was this going to be a bit of ‘free phys’ but it would be raising money for such a worthwhile cause. I did two 1 hr stints with a 60 min break between, my stints finished at midnight. Initially it felt strange being on the forecourt of Tesco Camberley cycling away, whilst people walked by to do their shopping. It wasn’t long though before all sorts of people, young and old came and chatted away
to us. The spin event and the charity seemed to stir up all sorts of emotions and memories in the people who donated very generously. It was a privilege to hear people talk about their own stories and connections to the military and the charity. Congratulations to all that kept the wheels spinning for 24hrs and helped to raise £1010.19. Thank you WO2 Zoe Beckett for organising such a great event, allowing us all to get involved and the lasting gift of saddle sore!
