was caught in a late challenge just outside the box. Penalty awarded! AMS Captain Del Clifford stepped up to take the penalty, nicely slotting one home for the AMS taking us into an early 1-0 lead.
The REME battled hard and came back into the game leading 2-1 at half time.
After the half time team talk, bananas, sweets, fluid, pointers and encouragement from the Manager and Coaching Staff, AMS took to the pitch for the second half with determination and pride.
AMS dominated the second half with plenty of chances on goal.
Courtney Paxton came close to scoring before a crucial mistake from the REME goalkeeper, she rushed out to clear a pass behind the defensive line, misjudged the kick and placed it into the danger zone seeing Kiera Fitzpatrick simply place the ball into an empty net equalising the score to 2-2.
Time was ticking, we needed to dig deep, find that extra energy and work for each other. Del Clifford made a clever run, bursting into the box, she was clipped in a clumsy tackle. All I could hear was ‘’Refffff!’’ We were awarded the penalty, this was it, this was our opportunity to secure another AMS win! Again, the skipper showed great
leadership stepping up to take the pen. As always keeping her cool she calmly placed the ball in the back of the net, driving it into the bottom right corner; the keeper had no chance. Phenomenal goal! 3-2 AMS lead!
All we had to do now was defend. 2 minutes extra time was added to the clock, which seemed like forever. The REME tried to find an equaliser but were denied by a talented and determined AMS team.
We battled continuously for 92 minutes against a very good REME squad. Overall it was an evenly contested game and the result could have gone either way, but this day belonged to us, the AMS had that little bit extra which saw us lifting the Edwards Cup for the second successive year.
This was our first trophy together as a newly reformed AMS team. I am confident that the team will only get better and continue this journey. Our intent this season is clear:
• Retain the Edwards Cup 20/21
• Win the Army Women’s inter Corps
League 20/21
