REGIMENTAL JOURNAL OF THE ROYAL LANCERS (QUEEN ELIZABETHS’ OWN) 63
Royal Lancers on the night were Staff Sergeant Chappell, Lance Corporal Crawford and Trooper Sands. All of our boys won their bouts, convincingly cheered on by members of the Officers and, Warrent Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess. Best Boxer of the night went to Trooper Sands, a very proud moment as Mum and Dad were in attendance to see him presented his trophy.
With the Peto Cup moved from Nov 16 to Mar 17 the new boys in the Boxing Team, with a smattering of our veteran talent made the move to Bovington to represent the Regiment and bring home the belts, and retain the trophy. From the success of the regiment in 2015, other Regiments of the Corps were gun- ning for us and had invested solely in this night. The boxers performed admirably throughout the prelims and it was between us and the RTR vying for the RAC trophy. The Finals were once again held in the Tank Museum at Bovington and what a night of Boxing it was! It was clear from the off that all Regiments had upped their game and the standard of boxing was first class. Notably, Trooper Kyle – ‘The Punisher’ – Bowman rectified a wrong from last season and got best boxer, as well as being
Lance Corporal Crawford winning at Lance Corporal Doyle, RAC Super-
crowned the RAC Heavyweight Champion. Unfortunately, we did not retain our crown, placing competition runners-up to the RTR, and taking home three RAC weight champion belts: Troopers Bracken (Lightweight) and Bowman (Heavyweight); Lance Corporal Doyle (Super Heavyweight).
It is worthy of mention that all of our boxers fought valiantly and represented the Regiment with pride. The competition has proved that we are well established in the boxing community and that we have some excellent new talent to move forward to future competitions in the boxing calendar of 2017.
2017 looks to be a promising year with the Peto Cup Finals be- ing held in The Royal Lancers Gymnasium at Cambrai Lines on 29th March 2017. The finals will be an excellent opportunity for the regimental Boxing Coach to identify our future talent. Hope- fully, we will retain our crown at the Army Individuals Boxing Competition this year and take the RAC Trophy back from the RTR in the RAC Boxing Finals in November 2017.
