In 1935 the winner of the most popular table decoration at that year’s show received a special prize of one guinea (£1.05). That year additional classes of exhibits were introduced including knitting, Italian quilting, embroidery, glove making and baking. There was also a competition for the best front garden.
No shows were held during World War II.
In 1953 the Horticultural and Sweet
Pea Societies combined into one Society
and Show no. 33 was held in Home Close using the numbering from the former Horticultural Society. For many years this show was held
in the Great Hall, always a popular location, moving to Laxton Cloisters until the Covid pandemic, which caused the 2020 and 2021 shows to be cancelled, restarting again in 2022.
Our 100th Show will take place in the Acre Sports Hall on Saturday 15th 2.30pm-6pm and Sunday 16th July 2pm-5pm 2023. We do hope you will be able to join us to celebrate!
Matthew Biggs: gardener, writer and
broadcaster, will host a mini-Gardeners’ Question Time, before awarding the prizes and cups. Live music, a raffle and plant stall will help make this show one to remember. Homemade cakes, tea or coffee will be available from our pop-up tearoom.
