 Lieutenant Ned Fetherstonhaugh
Ned Fetherstonhaugh came to the Regiment after Eton College and Exeter University, with a passing detour through RMAS. He commissioned in August 2020, having been persuaded by fellow QDG Officer that accepting an unconditional offer from the RLC wasn’t quite as good an option as the QDG. His powerful combination of dashing good looks, charm and intel- lect made him a perfect fit for the QDG. He joined his brother officers after completing Phase 2 training beaming with pride, because he knew he had joined a truly incredible Regiment. During his short time in the QDG, Ned threw himself at any available challenge. His team thrived on the 2021 Mullens Cup and won the SERE patrol competition Exercise Evasion Eagle. These impressive performances showed off his gritty side which was often lost behind his more flamboyant characteristics. He was then aligned to the mighty C Sqn prior to Op NEWCOMBE 2. He joined the Sqn halfway through their tour and took on the callsign of 33D. Although he didn’t experience a full tour, he certainly got to tick off a few life experiences.
The Sqn led the way on the longest reconnaissance patrol since World War Two. He learned many lessons over those months in the desert, notably one about not admitting embar- rassing things to Welsh soldiers during an ice breaker. After Mali, Ned deployed on an STTT to Sierra Leone with Lt Fulloway as the UN Special Advisor to the RSLAF. After a short spell as a Troop Leader at Bovington, Ned was selected to be the XO at DRS to Brigadier Neil Budd. While doing this job, Ned served alongside fellow QDG Officer Captain Cooper on Exercise Warf- ighter. They developed a bond over their passion for literature and co-wrote a book that may become a best seller in years to come. In the Mess, Ned was very popular, and this was marked by the fact he was always ready to have a laugh and enjoy a gin and tonic. His relaxed approach, ability to talk to anyone and concern for his boys meant that he was a much-loved Troop Leader and should stand him in good stead in any challenge he takes on. We wish him the best of luck in the future.
