THE RIFLES ASSOCIATION
– GATHERING ALLIANZ PARK, LONDON
The 3rd Annual Rifleman’s Association Gathering was held again at Allianz Park, London, with in excess of 500 Riflemen; Regular, Reserve, Veteran and their families in attendance. The weather was far more pleasant than the almost unbearable heat we had to endure last year and thankfully the rain steered clear!
Activities started with Rugby kick off at 1500 after The Band and Bugles of The Rifles performed the National Anthem. A last-minute change in programme saw The Rifles team face Trowbridge RFC. The game was, of course, thoroughly engaging with a sterling effort from both sides. In the end, however, the players of Trowbridge RFC managed to triumph over The Rifles rugby team with an overwhelming score of 33-15 - not on the script but better luck next year lads! Major General Rupert Jones CBE, Chairman of The Rifleman’s Associ- ation, presented prizes to players.
The Massed Bands and Bugles of The Rifles, led by Senior BMaj, CSjt Simon Topp, put on an ever-excellent Sounding Retreat, treating us to a great selection from their music programme. This
annual Retreat by the Massed Bands and Bugles of The Rifles is truly special and will grow from strength to strength in years to come.
Following the Retreat, with spirits high and drinks in hand, everyone moved inside to gather around the Boxing Arena to support the main event of the day - RIFLES Boxing Team Vs RIFLES Select Team. Master of Ceremonies, Captain ‘Joey’ McCutcheon captured the room and explained the rules. Each fight consists of three, 2-minute bouts, with winners decided by an experienced panel of judges. Senior officers awarded prizes to all the fighters.
Those who chose to use the camping area, conveniently located just outside the main stadium, enjoyed the rest of their night, being able to put their feet up and make use of the bar and BBQ facilities.
Veterans and families mingled with serving Riflemen, which created a friendly and inclusive atmosphere throughout the course of the day. In all, a fantastic well organised event enjoyed by everyone. It is very important for Riflemen to support this event, with free transport provided from a number of our RHQ Regional Offices. We look forward to seeing you all next year!
