tasty time, he was able to reconstruct the document. He noted down every word, reference number, account number and the transactions, both in and out.
Without a branch of the bank in Rauston Quay, he visited the library to search for an address in Scotland. A kind lady behind the desk found one for him so he returned to the shed to compile two letters. He knew his dad worked in Inverness, and was an engineer.
Dear Dad
I miss you and hope you get this letter. I sent it to the bank. I am staying in a wooden shed at a seaside resort called Rauston Quay on the south coast. It is hard and sometimes I get scared. Mum is with Aunty Louisa. She can look at the sea all day long. Can I come and live with you, please? I am all right and can look after myself. I don’t have much money. Please will you write to me at the library. I have written the address on the back and I told the lady to keep your letter. I will fetch it. From Jake.
In the letter to the bank, he said his dad, Mr Alan Cooper, was a customer and worked in Inverness. He enclosed the letter to his dad and his handwritten copy of the torn statement with an explanation of why. From a tin on the shelf, he pulled out a wrapper containing the two stamps and proudly stuck one on the envelope.
Locking the shed door, he went through the short cut and ran the length of Heath Road to the postbox near the barber’s shop. ‘Hope you get this, Dad,’ he whispered, dropping it in.
