bedroomed apartment I wouldn’t need this. Mind you, my so-called spare room is little more than a cupboard. When you’ve freshened up, we’ll drive into town and later we can have dinner. Do you like Thai food?’
Marissa didn’t mention going upstairs to see the apartment and Louisa didn’t invite her either. The guest room was more than adequate for her needs so she’d have to wait.

Two days later, Louisa stood in the doorway of her small spare room and wondered if she’d made the right decision by agreeing to let her sister stay with her. In a few hours she’d return. Louisa was surprised that John didn’t want to come to Rauston and chose instead to stay with friends, and go to school in Lincolnshire until his mum found a flat. The sisters hadn’t kept in touch so Louisa knew nothing of the reason for her sister’s marriage break-up or
of John’s time in the children’s home.
Marissa took particular care to emphasise that her
husband had left her after John got caught up in a boy’s death. It was hard for Louisa to understand although her sister insisted John was innocent. She blamed a local family who had it in for her. They’d lied to the police, or so she said.
Unaware of her sister’s lies, Louisa had bought a new slimline storage sofa bed and made it comfortable. She was sure the room would be big enough with one tall cupboard and plenty of space inside the bed for the suitcase. Later in the week, Louisa hurriedly arranged a
