and felt relieved to see him jump off and run towards her. ‘It was awesome. I’m starving, Mum. Can we eat?’ Outside the station, chairs and tables beckoned hungry
travellers to rest and enjoy a hot breakfast. Marissa paid for one full English breakfast and two mugs of steaming tea. John gave her a puzzled look.
‘Oh, don’t fret about me, son. I ate before I left early this morning. I’m still full up,’ she lied. Consumed by the hustle and bustle of city life by the café, they scarcely had time to spare before their connecting train to the coast left, and hurried back inside the station. John enjoyed his second train ride and took in the countryside and towns as they whizzed by. Outside Rauston station they queued for the number seventeen bus and in no time stood at the back of his Aunt Louisa’s posh apartment block. Marissa seemed nervous.
‘We mustn’t forget to only use this entrance. It’s known as the service staircase and leads up to the residents’ kitchen doors. I have a code for this door and her back door. Your aunt didn’t give me one for the main entrance at the front. Later, I’ll take you to a safe place where you can stay.’
‘What place? Where?’ asked John.
‘Stop asking questions!’ she replied as they climbed the stairs. ‘I have to get us something to eat. You can put the TV on or find something to read.’
Inside the apartment, John stared around in amazement
