The boy hated the name but nodded the same as he’d done for months. He didn’t believe she’d paid a week’s rent at their last place. Hence why he had to leave the building early by the back door.
‘Listen to me. It will only be for a short while. I tried a youth hostel but you have to be over sixteen. One wanted eighteen pounds a night. I’ll come and check if you are OK and bring food to you twice a week. We can go to a car boot sale for anything you need. I’ve already bought a camping stove; it only cost two pounds. Here it is,’ she smiled, removing the stove from a carrier bag. ‘I’ll show you how to light it and we must get some saucepans as well.’
She placed the stove on the kitchen surface and turned the tap clockwise and flicked a lighter. The blue flames glowed around the small cooking ring as she adjusted the heat. ‘You’ll soon get the hang of it. I’ll bring replacement gas canisters and show you how to change them. You just have to lay low for a while until I sort myself out...’
Huh! I could do better lighting a fire in a field like I did in Nestonbrook spinney, thought John. He waited for her to continue, but instead she turned away from him.
‘I’m sure Louisa doesn’t have a clue what food is in here or how much it costs. Look at all this stuff,’ she said, opening the cupboards, fridge and freezer. ‘It’s jam- packed with expensive items.
