Can you help St. James’ Church with historical information?
St James’ Church, Thrapston is in the process of updating the historical guidebook that was written by Rev Andrew Daunton- Fear in the late 1980s.
Neil Busby from Thrapston Heritage is working on amendments with Andrew and some of the other clergy who have served in Thrapston over the past 40 years and he is hoping to find the answers to quite a few questions about changes that have taken place in the church.
Some answers are contained in church records or just by looking inside the church but there are some questions he would like to put to the local community.
For instance: In the Guidebook it says
‘The present pews downstairs came from
the chapel of the American Air Force Base in Chelveston in 1958. They were a gift.’ These pews were replaced by pink chairs which are still used in church today. Do you know which year the pews were replaced by chairs?
In the Guidebook it says ‘The top of the spire was repaired in 1897 and a new weathercock added... it came down in a gale in the 1970s.’ We can see there is a weathercock on the spire so it has been replaced, but do you know when it went

back up? Was it the original weathercock or a new one? Do you have any other information about it?
There are several historic box tombs in the churchyard, but do you know when the iron railings were erected around them and the outbuilding demolished?
Throughout the years there have been a number of changes carried out inside the church. How has the vestry changed since the 1980s?
Do you know the first names of any of these people: Mrs J A Minchington, Miss R Dunhill, Dr E and Mrs M Humphries and Mrs J Hindle.
Can you describe any events or changes that have taken place in the life of the church that you can remember?
Equally if you have any photos or memories of events in St James’ Church that you would like to share please be in touch.
