AMS Basketball

The pandemic has not been kind for sports; basketball being in teams with close contact and indoors took a while to re-boot. In
the summer of 2021 I was appointed the Secretary for the male team, and as a committee we were dedicated as a collective to get things back up and running.
With several training camps taking place in Aldershot, Catterick and London, the male and female teams surged ahead at the start of the season to the Inter-Corps competition. The female team set the bar high, winning the tournament and having several players selected for the Army and even tri-service team. The men fought hard and came 4th overall, besting our recent history. As you can see morale was high, though no one needs to take fashion tips from me with those colour shoes and ‘tash.
The season continued with the Inter-Units competition in Jan ‘22, this time organising my own unit’s team. With months of training we were able to finally get the 16 Med Regt basketball team their chance to shine. Over two days of competition (3v3 and 5v5) and coaching sessions from an Olympic and GB Veteran basketball player; the event was
a success for sport and recruiting for the future.

On Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th April 22 the AMS netball tournament was held at Worthy Down.
As Team Captain, I managed to rally around to get enough dental players to enter a team into the AMS Netball tournament. The team name was DPHC Mixed.
As a team, we had very little experience on our side and we had never played netball together, however by the end of day 2, we had shown massive improvement and even though we didn’t win a game, we still walked away from the event with our heads held high and the team cohesion was amazing.

The second place in the men’s 3v3 and second place in the women’s 5v5 for 16 Med was a proud moment for a little squad due to the number of last minute taskings 16 Med Regt had on.
The AMS Sport Union dinner night was
a great event to round out the season, with four players receiving their full colours and
it was an honour to have been part of the process to see them succeed. But nothing ever really waits and onto the next season
we go with training camps and next Inter- Corps happening in October; back to how it usually is, all together at Grantham.
I am proud of the team and the friendly supportive environment there is to primarily enjoy the sport. There are always things going on and ways to be involved either
at your local unit or for the AMS. Should anyone want to play basketball, please do not hesitate to reach out to myself - Rhys. watson127@mod.gov.uk
she observed us on the court and provided us with basic coaching. During the two days, we were lucky enough to have Lt Col Winship help us out in a few games.

During our two days of playing netball, I think the DPHC (Mixed) team showed great
promise as a newly formed team. Although we didn’t win many matches, there was some lovely attacking play and defending from the team. Throughout the games we had many consistent errors, however this didn’t impact our team morale. By the end of the second day, we came together with many positives that we should take away
