The Murph Challenge
LCpl Heather Hughes
Army Training Centre (Pirbright) (ATC(P)), conducted a sporting event called “The Murph Challenge” this was dedicated to Michael P. Murphy, the first service member to receive the Medal of Honor for service in Afghanistan, during a Memorial Day event on Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, May 24, 2015.
It was open to all ATC(P) Serving Personnel (SP) and would take place in Unit PT time, the challenge consisted of:
• 1 mile run,
• 100 pull ups,
• 200 press ups
• 300 Air Squats
• 1 mile to finish.
Males were to wear 9kg Vest, Females
6kg (optional).
However there was an additional option
for SP:
• 1 mile run (just the once)
• 5 pull ups
• 10 press ups
• 20 Air squats
• X20 rounds of each.
• 1 mile run to finish
This one was the one I decided to do.
On the morning of the Murph challenge it
was a warm sunny day with a lot of morale in the air. We started off with a quick brief and a 5-minute warm up before lining up on the track about to set off. I was fine for the first mile and my first 13 rounds however the last few rounds did become slightly more challenging as the weather started to get warmer.
I completed it in 50 minutes, although quite challenging it was an amazing event
to be part of. I ended up coming second in the Murph challenge and won myself a £30 amazon voucher and an Armed Forces Day Tribute coin.
I would recommend anyone looking for a challenge to take part. Although it can be difficult at times the morale was rewarding and you have a great sense of pride once finished.
Benefits of
studying a
Masters in
Restorative
Dentistry
Dentists are increasingly choosing
to embark on postgraduate dentistry qualifications and taking advantage of many benefits along the way. Here are four ways a Masters in Restorative Dentistry could benefit your practice.
Improve the care you provide locally
This programme has been designed to
meet the needs of dental practitioners. On completion, you will provide the highest quality of restorative dentistry within primary dental care. Many graduates have extended the treatments offered within their own practice and have reduced the number of cases referred to specialists.
Study for a postgraduate qualification without leaving your clinic or home
At the University of Edinburgh there is fully interactive, award-winning online learning
technology. All educational material is available in one place. Coursework for assessment is uploaded to the site and there is an active student discussion board available alongside tutor-led discussions.
Differentiate yourself from
other general dentists
The qualification you obtain will signal to the world that you are a forward thinking and highly motivated general dentist. Many graduates have been promoted into senior roles within the salaried GDP service. A number have been accepted as clinical tutors within dental schools or within vocational training schemes.
Interact with colleagues
from all over the world
Often general dental practice is delivered
in small clinics, sometimes with only one
or two dentists supported. That sometimes means that we are isolated and lack contact with colleagues.
This programme is aimed at all dentists throughout the world, giving them a chance to learn together.
