With the return of face-to-face training,
the RADC reserve conference was held in Edinburgh on 11-13 of March 2022, after a virtual conference in 2021. It was a great pleasure to return to face-to-face training, with delegates traveling from across the UK to meet in person for the first time
since before the Covid-19 pandemic. Due
to unavailability of local MOD estates, the conference was held at the Radisson Blu hotel on the Royal Mile, a few minutes’ walk from Edinburgh Castle.
The conference began with an update
on Corps matters, with talks from Col Amberton, Col Commandant RADC, and Col Davies CDO Army. For the new members
of the Corps this served as an illuminating introduction, and for the more experienced members it served as an update on the intended direction of the Corps for the next few years. This was followed by a very useful talk on career management, from Lt Col Sutton, SO1 Reserves (North), CM AMS. There was plenty of food for thought for both new and old members alike on how to progress individuals’ careers.
After a light lunch, the focus shifted to clinical training. Major Neil Heath talked about oral cancer imaging for the general dentist, Major Jim Scott talked about the when, why, and how of composite bonding, and Major David Edwards rounded the afternoon off with an update on endodontics.
There was something for everyone with plenty of discussion throughout.
A formal dinner was held in the evening, with pre- and post-dinner drinks. Everyone enjoyed the evening, a missing piece of mess life throughout the past couple of years, with new friends made and old friends reunited.
The conference was rounded off on Sunday morning with a fantastic tour of Edinburgh Castle and a chance to soak up some of its rich history, or merely to allow
the gusty wind to blow away the bleary eyes from the night before.
Our thanks go to the speakers for sharing some of their extensive knowledge, the hotel for putting us up in such splendid surroundings, and Major Kersten Martin and Lt Col Iain McIntyre for their tireless work bringing it all together. It was a great weekend for all who attended, and all are looking forward to a return to Cardiff for the 2023 conference.
