Editorial team:
Major Iain Rose,
WO1 (CRSM) Stuart Rowles and WO1 David Blackmore.
I would like to start by
thanking our contributors
for the selection of
articles that we have
received for this edition.
We purposely moved
the closing date to allow
time for our young writers
to get back into gear
following their Christmas
break. We continue to
receive some interesting
articles from our friends in
Australia and this year we
will be meeting up with
them in Pozieres, France
when many of us will be
attending the unveiling of
an Australian Animal War
memorial. There will be more about this in the next edition.
We will sadly be saying farewell to our present Chief Veterinary Of cer or better known as DAVRS by most. Colonel Douglas Macdonald leaves the Army after 35 years service. We wish him and his wife Fiona the very best in their new life at Melton Mowbray. His successor is Colonel Neil Smith who most readers will be familiar with, as he was the previous CVO or DAVRS. More about Colonel Smith in the next edition.
Some readers may be confused with yet another change, the Defence Animal Centre (DAC) will soon change its title to the Defence Animal Training Regiment (DATR) and you will pick this up in some of the articles from this unit.
I would like to take this opportunity to say a very big thank you on behalf of the RAVC and all our readers to Eukanuba for having
sponsored Chiron Calling for the last 16 years. Due to their generosity, we have been able to publish this magazine free of charge to our readers. However, this will be the last edition that Eukanuba is sponsoring and we are indeed most grateful for their support. We would like to thank in particular Mike Bloxsome and his team for their care and support over such a long period.
Crest Publishing, our publishers put in an enormous amount of work to generate the
sponsorship for each edition of our magazine and needless to say that they are presently working tirelessly to nd us a new major sponsor or sponsors for Chiron Calling in future. We would like to thank Caroline Nall, Jayne Creer, Andy Poole, Ed Parker and all the Crest team for their effort in promoting and producing our Corps magazine which is read around the world.
Our readers will see in this edition that we have started planning for the celebration of the RAVC Centenary in 2018. There is an outline plan of the events that are being considered by a committee to mark this date in the history of the Corps.
As we said farewell to Lt Gen Sir James Everard KCB CBE, we welcome our new Colonel Commandant, Brigadier Roly Walker DSO who assumed his role on 1 March 2017. A short pen picture on Brigadier Walker is included in this edition.
