Since the last update, time has indeed passed quickly. Though writing up the history is coming along at pace, material is still being gathered and collated. I expect there is still much out there both written and oral yet to be exploited. Collecting all the data, from dry of cial memos to stirring oral testimonies, at times, has seemed daunting but simultaneously enthralling. Who, when, why, how – combining a vast jig-saw of varied information to present a focused and true account of yesteryear. Encompassing topics such as the saga of the rebuild at Melton Mowbray to
operational tales from Northern Island to the personal anecdotal tale, often surrounded by an aura of mirth; all are fundamental to the story of the Corps. Hopefully, the history will also convey the unique and endearing relationship between man and beast that develops from initial training to operational deployment. It has indeed been a pleasure to be involved in this project and sanguinely the end product will do justice to the men, women and animals involved.

The RAVC CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS – 2018
The RAVC will be celebrating the Centenary of their Royal Warrant which was awarded to the Army Veterinary Corps by HM King George V
on 27 Nov 1918 as a result of their signi cant success in treating horses during WW1, and when the Corps became the Royal Army Veterinary Corps.
A committee met at Melton Mowbray in February to discuss a number of events that would be held throughout the year 2018 to mark this key occasion in the history of the RAVC, culminating to the Centenary day on 27 Nov 2018.
Bronze Bust of the Colonel in Chief. Following endorsement by the RAVC Council, a Bronze Bust of the Colonel in Chief, HRH Princess Anne is to be commissioned to mark the centenary and three sculptors had been approached to date. An order will be placed in the next few months and it is anticipated that the Bronze Bust would be unveiled by HRH at a dinner in 2018. Once unveiled this artefact would become part of the RAVC Chattels and the original would be displayed at the DAC in the rst instance.
Centenary Dinner at Buckingham Palace or St James Palace. The of ce of HRH The Princess Royal had been approached with a view to an RAVC Centenary Dinner to be held either at Buckingham Palace or St James Palace in the presence the RAVC Colonel in Chief. Although no rm date had been set, in is anticipated that this event will take place in 2018.
Soldiers and Families Fun Day at North Luffenham. The Committee recommended that a soldiers’ and families’ day be held a North Luffenham on Saturday 8 September 2018 to coincide with the rst day of the Annual Camp for the RAVC reservists.
This families day would be in the form of a fun day for all and would be subsidised by the RAVC Regimental Amenities Fund.
RAVC Centenary Parade at Melton Mowbray. Although this
is still to be con rmed, the Mayor’s of ce and
Town Council at Melton Mowbray had been
approached with a view to holding an RAVC
Centenary parade through the town of Melton Mowbray during the Summer of 2018. Initial recommendations had been received from the Town Council including the route and a Reception following the parade.
The proposed date is Friday 27 July 2018, to coincide with the annual Farmers Lunch at the DAC. The Centenary parade would include:
a. Horses with Riders dressed in WW1 uniform. b. MWD and handlers.
c. Marching troops.
d. RAVC Association.
e. Military Band.
A reception would be held at the DAC for all participants and guests following the parade.
RAVC Centenary Commemorative Coin
The committee felt that a Corps memento should be designed to mark the Centenary of the RAVC and initial suggestion was for a commemorative coin.
Further details will be in future Chiron Calling and on the RAVC Association website.
Centenary Day – Tue 27 Nov 18
The Committee discussed a proposition for the celebration of the actual Centenary day on Tuesday 27 November 2018, and although this is still to be decided, a suggestion was for a Centenary Service followed by a curry Lunch to be held at the DAC. Further details will be published in the next Chiron Calling and on the RAVC Association website.
