     thanks
Thanks to Annie Surtees and Steve Dennison from Salford City Council for organising this work; we could not have done this without them.
In my last article I reported that we had a problem with flooding and had to build a pond, which reduced the number of plots to 28. Unfortunately, they have had more flooding, put
in another pond and brought in 40 tonnes
of top soil, which has reduced the plots to 25. However, they are now
all tenanted and being worked. With the help
of the extra soil, they have also obtained some power tools and a lock
up container for storage. The project for this year is a Communal building for which they hope to purchase the material and erect themselves. The Committee have done very well and good luck to them in the future. The photographs show the state of the ground before work started, and a plan of the site.

Mossfield Allotments
Originally Salford Council became involved in Mossfield Allotments following a meeting with the Allotment group. The original request was to appoint a contractor to fence the area off with a secure weldmesh fencing system and gates. The type chosen was ‘358’ security mesh as approved by the Home Office.
Following a site visit it became clear that there was a large amount of derelict fencing including barbed wire, concrete posts, steel gate frames and chain link fencing that would need to be cleared. In addition, the contractor would also need to cut back and clear the overgrown vegetation along the proposed fence line. Subsequently
we were asked to have a look at the access from Moss Lane and upgrade it to make it suitable for vehicle use, and in particular disabled parking close to the new allotment site.
Once the initial proposals had been developed it became clear that Payback would be unable to prepare the growing area and make it suitable for allotment use. We amended the proposed works to include the cutting
Due to a lack of nearby facilities a compost toilet was also added and installed
back and removal of the existing vegetation and debris – an area of 4262m/2. Other works required to bring it up to an acceptable standard for allotments included rotovating the area, installing gravel footpaths and treating the emergent weed growth with an approved herbicide. Compost bays were added to encourage recycling. Due to a lack of nearby facilities a compost toilet was also added and installed.
