Composting on a Mega Scale

The HOTBIN Mega is like no other compost bin on the market, a large- scale batch hot composter that reaches temperatures of 40-60°C all year round without the need for activators or an external plug-in heat source.
The innovative design incorporates thick insulating walls which lock in the heat generated naturally by bacteria during decomposition allowing the internal temperature to rise for fast and efficient composting.
HOTBIN Mega can be located on
any flat surface, in sun or shade. You maintain hot composting temperatures by regularly adding in a mix of chopped waste, then 90 days later dismantle
the walls to harvest your rich peat
free compost. The two aeration pipes
in the solid base help keep the unit composting aerobically without the need for any hefty turning of the pile. Use shears where possible to cut up any allotment plant waste, this will speed decomposition and help naturally aerate the heap.
Built into the lid, the thermometer is used to keep an eye on the internal temperature whilst the charcoal filter neutralises any odours.

• Add waste – a minimum quantity of 40 litres (20kgs) per week
– roughly one mower box or
half a wheelbarrow full
• Add woody material - to improve aeration when composting grass and high water content kitchen waste
• Add shredded paper – to control moisture levels when adding high nitrogen items like fruit and vegetable waste and grass – it’s a great way to recycle paper and cardboard and a good source of extra carbon.
