Open top water barrels
Open top water barrels can be a breeding ground for all sorts of pests like mosquitoes. Adding a teaspoon of vegetable oil works wonders and stops the water going green as well.
If you are looking for an alternative to an open top water butt, then a common wheelie bin can be repurposed for water collection with the added bonus of a lid for peace of mind.
Purchase and insert a cheap plastic tap into the side of the bin and secure the edges with water proof tape to prevent leakage; et voila!
