LCpl Mudd preparing patient for surgery
including emergency veterinary care, anaesthesia of sick patients, handling feral cats, assisting
with colic work ups, dentals and radiography. Not only have I gained more confidence, I have also had the opportunity to learn new skills such as developing my suturing technique by stiching up after routine surgeries. My favourite
part of the job is the exposure to inpatient care; I have been able
to adapt my nursing skills to
each individual MWD and see the significant impact I have had when they return to fit working dogs.
There are some challenges when caring for MWDs in Cyprus; the
risk of heat illness in MWDs with temperatures often reaching 40°C in the summer months, highly venomous and often aggressive Blunt Nosed Vipers and the notorious grass seeds, that have found their way into dogs’ ears, eyes, feet and even the lungs. My most recent challenge was the emergency treatment of MWD Yara, who was bitten by a viper on the ear and immediately presented with neurological signs. I was first on scene to provide emergency
care by administering intravenous fluid therapy to prevent shock and lavaging the venomous puncture wounds prior to the VO arriving.
MWD Yara was in a very serious condition but after a week of intensive nursing and round the clock care she made a full recovery and is now back in work and licensed with her handler.
Whilst the Vet Tech’s duties are demanding, Cyprus offers a wide range of opportunties to make the most of your time oustide of work. I have spent time walking the trails in the Troodos mountains, horse riding, doing watersports and relaxing
on one of the many wonderful beaches. My favourite experience here was paddle boarding in the early mornings where I have been lucky enough to see many turtles and dolphins. There are numerous sporting opportunities in Cyprus
to suit all interests and there are many events held throughout the year. During my five month tour
in Cyprus I represented Episkopi Station in a swimming competition and also completed the virtual 60km Mountain to Sea bike ride where our team came second.
My veterinary nursing has improved rapidly during my time with Cyprus MWD Troop. The VT’s position is a unique and rewarding job role and whilst it requires hard-work, I would recommend the experience to all VTs. It is a great confidence boost, your skills will be improved and challenged and it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
