Drive Direction Seminar –
Delivered by Lee Paul and
Gayle of PBK9 Protection Dogs
by Cpl Denslow
On 29 June 2021, the Defence Animal Training Regiment (DATR) hosted PBK9
Protection Dogs for a seminar to share their unique training system with the trainers of Canine Training Squadron (CTS). Due to Covid-19 restrictions only fifteen trainers could take part in the seminar, comprising of all aspects of the squadron that civilian trainers, search trainers and police trainers could reap the benefits of the day.
Lee and Gayle of PBK9 Protection Dogs were chosen due to their reputation within the canine industry as well as outstanding reviews from previous seminars. PBK9s seminar was a theory based, one day event that went through their own system of training dogs from start to finish. It included topics such as obedience, bite
work, tracking, indication training, classical and operant conditioning, drives and rewards; all of which are very relevant to the trainers here
at the DATR. After talking through 20 / Chiron Calling
their system, they then went on to discuss a tailored package of training which would help the trainers to train within the strict timelines faced in their day to day roles. Lee and Gayle went on to answer questions from the all in attendance to aid them moving forward in
complex subjects such as classical and operant conditioning was delivered perfectly throughout the day, leaving every trainer in the room with notebooks full of lessons learned.
Moving forward from the seminar, the reviews from those that
attended have been amazing. Everyone
took on vast amounts of knowledge and advice and are now applying techniques such as clicker
training, free shaping, decoy techniques and many more in
their day to day training with their Military Working Dogs. The seminar delivered by PBK9 Protection Dogs was a great success and I, on behalf of all the trainers at CTS would like to say a massive thank you to Lee and Gayle from PBK9 Protection Dogs for an outstanding seminar.
