on 15 June 1577, Queen elizabeth I granted lands and properties for the establishment of a school in Kettering. over the next 300 years, Kettering grammar school had a varied history educating many men who became renowned. the original old grammar school and Master’s House situated in gold street was demolished in the 1970s along with other buildings in the town centre. this is when Kettering Civic society was formed to prevent further destruction of the town’s important architecture.
the mosaic was specially commissioned for a new grammar school built in the 1960s on Windmill Avenue. Because the school had a long and special history the mosaic was intended to give the building a unique look that would set it apart from other concrete clad buildings of that time.
