ART NEWS
The Arts Society, Oundle
Our 2022/23 lecture season came
to an end in June with a marvellous
lecture by Michael Howard, ‘David Hockney: a certain generosity of spirit.’ The breadth and depth of insight into this fascinating artist was stunning, typifying the outstanding quality of lectures we enjoyed last season.
This season’s programme is on the website, members have their new season programme card, and it is as varied and interesting as ever. Check it out, and if you are interested in joining The Arts Society, go to the membership section on the website: theartssocietyoundle.org.uk.
In November we will be continuing our study day programme (three lectures and lunch),
with lecturer Timothy Walker on ‘The History
of Gardening through the eyes of a Botanical Gardener.’ Details of the event are on the website.
Since our last bulletin the most significant development for us – and confirmation at long last of getting back to normality – has been the resumption of a programme of trips. In June we enjoyed a memorable trip to the much updated and enhanced Royal Saxon Burial Ground at
Sutton Hoo. Anyone who has been
recently will know that the exhibition halls and burial mound tours now do justice
to one of England’s most significant sites. We would have visited in 2020 had not Covid arrived, so it was doubly pleasing for us to finally get there. We hope to continue arranging trips next season and details will be on the website – if there is room, non-members will be welcome.
The first lecture of the season on Friday
15th September was by Imogen Corrigan on ‘The Green Man in English Churches.’ To whet your appetite (and see what fantastic value membership is at ten lectures for £45!), the rest of the season includes lectures on Art Deco, the polymath Ravindranath Tagore, Banksy, Tintoretto, designer Thomas Heatherwick, composer William Byrd, Georgia O’Keefe and Sir Stamford Raffles.
