Head Office
From the President
The work of the Society continues to make demands on the office staff and regional representatives who often work long hours.
It is important to support the movement and your local representatives. You may not require their services at the moment but you never know when you may need their expertise and advice.
The Watford Struggle is an example of
an excellent campaign well run by the local organisation, supported by the National and most importantly, supported by hundreds
of individual and allotment association members throughout the land. What happens with one association, one site, even one member has repercussions on all of us. We are learning all of the time how to address the issues and create strategies for all to ensure the future of our movement.
At the time of writing this the summer season is drawing to a close and much has been achieved by all. The number of open sites and ongoing projects ensure that our allotment community continues to grow. Please continue to send us your project and experiences on your site. Let us all share
and give advice to each other.
I have enjoyed invitations to Soham
Allotment Association in Cambridgeshire where a great project has seen the creation of an amazing wildlife garden combined with raised bed gardens for vegetables including a greenhouse and the obligatory shed. This site transformed a run down area with the help of the association and
a member with a passion for wildlife and a desire to enable the local school to gain the experience of gardening while learning also about caring for wildlife.
I have also had the privilege to be invited to the excellent Red House Farm Allotment site and to an annual Society Gala and BBQ in Coventry which was opened by the local Lord Mayor and attended by not only the tenants but friends and families too. The weather held fine and everyone had a great time. This is a well run site and a credit
to Jos Williams and his team. Guess who ended up as the auctioneer to raise funds for the future! My compliments to the chef and assistants who managed to supply an array of fabulous hot and cold fare while
the soup at entry point and delicious cakes
were a strain on the waistline!
I look forward to visiting and meeting
many more of our members in the future to hear your stories about any concerns you may have. I am also excited to be meeting the folks in Durham at the next meeting of the Northern Region and the West Midlands Region at the Annual General Meeting, both in November.
The Nottingham Federation have also invited me to their meeting on the 20th November at Baseford Hall and I look forward to meeting their members too.
I have received many messages of congratulations on my election as your president and I thank you all. There have been several enquiries that I am pleased to report that I have been able to assist with.
As the autumn and winter seasons approach the time to plan for the future comes. Seed catalogues have arrived
from Kings Seeds and deciding what new varieties we will try next year is very exciting!
Keep smiling, for together we are strong.
