The next attack began in earnest. The Fire Sup- port sections provided calls of “Charlie!” and “Delta!” which echoed around the charred plains of Hankley Common, confusing dog walkers and horse riders alike. Assault sections gave Gurkha Company Satang a rough day at the office, through the medium of smoke and hand grenades. The now standard practice mix of perfectly executed drills and ruthless charges at GPMG positions saw 7 Platoon conduct another successful platoon attack, dealing with every enemy position and depth positions with deadly skill.
Finally, the last attack. With heads full of work on points and now experience, 7 Platoon was ready to conduct their best attack to date. Under the leadership of Mr Hodge, they advanced towards the final enemy position. Contact! The platoon swung into action. The first position was obliterated by 1 Section (who clearly wanted to take as little ammunition back to the assembly area as possible), commanded by Mr Bever, who gave the enemy position a section attack to remember by using all the pyrotechnics and ammunition they had at their disposal. The 2 depth positions were dealt with in similar fashion. The platoon learnt a valuable lesson during this attack as they carried their casualties up a rather steep hill on stretchers.
Once the final debrief was complete and the brass was picked, the platoon donned their day sacks and tabbed back to board the white fleet coaches which would sail them home to a delightful evening of scrubbing kit and cleaning rifles. The well-earned tea and medals had to wait as the dulcet tones of pop world in Guild- ford called in the distance...
