P. 6
I write this whilst we are still in the grip of a national lockdown. We must all be thinking thank goodness for our love of gardening and growing of vegetables. I hope you have used the winter months wisely with
a lot of tidying up, seed ordering, digging and getting ready to go again this year, or perhaps you have joined in with some of the new NVS on-line activities such
as the Christmas Santa competition, the gardener’s question & answer
session via Zoom and more
recently, was a Zoom evening
with Medwyn Williams talking about ‘Growing for Chelsea’. I am happy to see these
are keeping you entertained
these evenings when we can’t
go to the pub or visit friends,
we have a few more talks in
the pipeline. The talks are all
incorporated via Zoom utilizing
our NVS subscription to the
maximum. It’s nice that you
can enjoy the talks for free,
without any travel or cold halls plus you can relax with beer, wine or a cuppa along with some nibbles in the comfort of your armchair, what’s not to like.
The NVS has re-energised its own Facebook page and also created a new National Vegetable Society Question site
on Facebook for you to use as a source of information for any veg growing questions you may have.
Things are moving on with the NVS development plan whilst we are working from home with communication and Kitchen/ Leisure Gardening being the current focal points.
I’m happy to say that the new membership database and website went live and is working well, and we have received many good reviews. Your feedback is welcome, and you can use the new website now, so have a look at what is available and of interest.
The early part of the year doesn’t appear to be looking very healthy as the spring shows are already starting to be cancelled
like Malvern Spring Festival is postponed, Harrogate Spring Show has been deferred from April to May 20th – 23rd and the Chelsea Flower Show has been moved to September 21st - 26th. We have to have sympathy with all the growers that were planning to attend these shows as growing started several months ago now, especially our President, Medwyn Williams, who was working towards Chelsea and has had to
issue of Simply Veg. You may notice that the judges are all fairly local to the area, but as the Trustees were organizing this show as a one off, we felt we could move away from the traditional distribution of judges, to minimize costs and any increased potential outlay in case of Covid cancellations.
Please make a note that most Branches have moved their AGMs to June in the hope it can be face to face. Please check your local branch section towards the back of the magazine and keep a check on the status in the events section of the NVS website.
Finally, I wish to thank all those of you who contribute articles to the SV as it is a magazine for members written by members, so you are all welcome to write something and contribute, no matter how small, as its quite refreshing to read the variety of articles and shared ideas from your veg gardens.
So please keep them coming the more the merrier. Articles on any aspect of vegetable growing, the NVS or related topics will
be gratefully received, please send to the address at the bottom of page 3. They can be typed or hand written and if you have any photographs please send these as Jpegs or Tiff files. - Ed
Lady Chair’s Report
SANDRA HALL FNVS, NATIONAL LADY CHAIR
The NVS has re- energised its own Facebook page and also created a new National Vegetable Society Question site
start again for the new dates. Unfortunately, our
Sponsors/partners, Marshalls, and D.T Brown haven’t been able to supply members with the Mimi Tomato or the Falco turnip, because of the high demand on seed sales and ‘Brexit’ complications but they continue to support us financially by sponsoring the National show for which we are very grateful.
For your information, the ‘Chairman’s challenge’
class 26 in the National Show, will be mini cucumbers this year
Planning for the National Championships are progressing very well, a group of volunteers have come forward, but we could always do with a few more as ‘many hands make light work’ your schedule is within this
