Charity fundraising.......................................................................
It’s not all doom and gloom, the Rotary Club spread cheer...
December is often a time when people look back on the year and look to the future. Like people in many organisations Rotary Club members can look back and say: “What
an unusual year we have had”. At the start of 2020 we were distributing hyacinths to deserving people and organising events and competitions. Highlights then included Rotary Young Musician and our Annual Charity Quiz night. Our two Rotary youth exchange candidates were looking forward to visiting, and hosting, new friends from other countries. We were planning more events and activities and getting ready to help with Sailability. Then it all changed
and we had to learn new ways of meeting, not in person but via Zoom. We had to rethink our meetings and how we could enjoy stimulating speakers. We had to find new ways to raise money to help deserving causes like the local foodbanks.
Looking back on the year we have enjoyed some success. It has not been all gloom and doom. We continue to meet and, whilst we have not raised as much for charitable work as we would have done in a ‘normal’ year, we have managed to help some deserving causes. By the time this is

published we will have held our first online charity fundraising quiz and more could take place in the new year. Schools and youth organisations will also have been invited
to take part in a variety of Rotary youth competitions and activities.
We are now planning our annual Christmas Party, even though we can’t meet in person! We will have party hats, cracker jokes, carol singing and entertainment. Will Father Christmas make an appearance? Despite the virus we also plan to continue
to have our Annual Carol Service and, although it will not be the same as when we could meet together in a local church, we will no doubt enjoy singing gustily in our own homes as we all join in the service.
As we come to the end of the year we look forward to 2021, during which we
hope we will all return to a more normal existence. We look forward to celebrating more successful fundraising and to making a difference in our own communities and the wider world. As we all celebrate Christ’s birth at Christmas we wish you, and all those you love, a very Happy Christmas and a better year in 2021!
