and buy a pink mortar board! Where on earth I would find a ‘pink’ mortar board? She was so excited but, as children do, said she had to go then as her mum was on at her to go to bed. I was left with a problem to solve, but her words haunted me. The ‘pink mortar board’, surely had to feature somewhere in our Appeal – for weren’t we, by talking about breast cancer, educating people? Fast forward and our logo never changed!
I scoured the internet to find local milliners who may be able to help. Were there milliners about these days? I found a phone number for one in Rushden but on ringing them, they had moved to Essex. I relayed to them the urgency and need to adhere to this child’s request and was told that if I could send them a black mortar board, my size, they would construct a pink one. Wow!! How wonderful!

I knew somewhere in my garage I had a black mortar board from when I graduated years ago so I dug that out and sent it off to Essex and then came up with the idea of having a black gown to wear with it and proceeded to make contact with Nene College, as an alumni, to ask if I could borrow one. Yes! They were intrigued and they, like many other people I got to know, chose Crazy Hats (when they were given the status as a University a few years down the line) as their nominated charity for a year.
