the nurses I felt like a trussed up chicken sitting on a supermarket shelf – everything feeling so tight.
It was wonderful to be mobile again, even if it was on a commode – and to feel clean! They got another mirror to show me what my back looked like. It must have taken the surgeons ages to stitch me up for I was cut from hip to hip; I had a scar underneath and above the new breast and a scar going across the middle of it which stretched out to the middle of my back from where they had taken the new tissue.
WOW again!
I didn’t even care when Mr Varma called in – me sitting naked on a commode, admiring myself in the mirror! All inhibitions had gone.
All the exertion and related excitement had worn me out but – I was bouncing back and knew that each day was now going to get better. Glennis was back in control!
The following day they said I was well enough to be moved to a different room in the unit – a room with a view – with sunshine pouring through the window. I felt alive again and was now able to wear my new pyjamas! As soon as I settled I was determined to walk – to the toilets, the catheter having been taken out - and was really, really pleased that I could manage it. Those few yards seemed endless and I felt light-headed but – mission accomplished – and, although it was a painful and a slow walk, I wasn’t as bent over as they thought I might be. Mr Varma, who watched, was delighted – and had his camera at hand to take photos of the new boob. Everyone in the Unit shared in our delight and whoever came to see me always wanted to have a look – one doctor suggesting Mr Varma and I sell our pictures to the tabloids!!
My new boob was quite a talking point!
In the evening I was cheered up even more when Liz (work) and Marilyn came to see me. They had come by train after school and they were just the tonic I needed, as was a surprise visit by Julie. The four of us were quite raucous but no one minded – I was so appreciative of their company and offered them my bed to lie down and recover when they saw the extent of my surgeries! Like me, they were astounded but glad it was all over and I was in one piece!
The next day Denise came to see me so we could compare our ‘war wounds’ and she too, was very impressed. Then, to my delight, Andrew and sister-in-law Marilyn brought Mum over who was desperate to see me and me her! We’d chatted on the phone (expecting huge bills as the phone I used was a Pay-As-You-Go bedside, hospital phone and ate up the pounds very quickly. When Mum rang, the cost to her was enormous – £32 for just one call! – although she said every second was worth it.) I never told her the full extent of the procedures but proudly showed them what I’d had had done which took my brother completely by surprise – Mum unable to see, of course.
