  They took it“
evening when Mr and Mrs Varma invited me to be their guest when the school held their end of year Prize Giving Ceremony at the De Montfort Hall in Leicester (which brought back memories of when I graduated there).
For Breasts Reunited III and IV we chose a large golf complex in Leicester for our venue – having done rugby and football – and organised some ‘fun’ activities. The attendance was still very pleasing and the staff saw it as an annual date in their diaries. For No. 3 we had a cupcake decorating challenge. The Consultants went first (more
consultants had joined us, including Dr Matthew) and we dressed them up in their scrubs, gloves and masks and gave them syringes. On the tables we had plain fairy cakes in cases, loads of tubes of coloured icing and a huge array of bits and pieces with which to decorate their creations – in a set time. They took it so seriously!!! It was as if they were performing an operation on the cakes but they entered into the spirit of things with shouts of encouragement from us and much laughter when they showed us their finished products. The consultants partners went next but the jollity of it was getting worse! So much so that when it was the time for the nurses to have a go, the whole room was a mess! It was my turn to be embarrassed then when Claire, on behalf of the Plastics Team presented me with a very personalised ‘certificate’.
In the interim we had worked closely with patients and staff and our website designers, James and Mike, to produce a Breasts Reunited website that was something very unique. Through the website we were able to talk viewers through a breast reconstruction ‘journey’ at LRI, showing them round the Kinmonth Unit, telling them what to expect, who would be looking after them, interviews with the Consultants and patients and even animated visuals of the different procedures
available.
For Breasts Reunited IV – hat
making was the theme with the Consultants having to design and embellish a cardboard hat and wear
so seriously! It was as if they were performing an
operatio”
