walkers, face painters, balloon artists, balloon sales for a balloon release (although we did stop this when there were national concerns about the danger to animals), wonderful cake sales (organised by Julia and her team!), plant and seed sales, with packets of seeds (Angel Wings) donated by local Garden Centre, Bosworths, selfie-boards, Crazy Hats tombolas, Crazy Hats merchandise sales, hat sales and even bones and treats for the dogs who walked – and won prizes for their hats!
• More refreshment facilities – burger vans! (The hot bacon butties always a welcomed treat once we’d set up!)
• New medals each year – it was such a lovely feeling to place a medal round the walkers’ necks.

• A change from walkers making their hats to Avon funding (as well as t-shirts) – pink baseball caps. Over the years the ‘hats’ had been stunning but we felt people were perhaps getting a little tired of making them with many not wearing a hat, so by introducing a ‘uniform’ hat this was one worry less. They looked good too! It made the ‘team’ look far more impressive and united. Photographs show this! We were keeping up with modern trends and looked the part!

For me, once the ribbon had been cut and the walkers set off, the most moving part of any walk was reading the messages written on people’s backs – who they were walking for and why. Reading such personal words enforced in my mind how much Crazy Hats was needed and how each Walk was like a glorified coffee and chat morning, for these walks brought everyone together – everybody talked to each other; the atmosphere was relaxed, but always very happy. Many of the walkers were, themselves, quite poorly, but determined to be there and to do what they could. Every walk was such an inspiration. I felt so proud of every single person there – all walking, all helping – to support breast cancer care in our County. Without the walkers we would have had no walks – without their sponsors no funds would have been raised – so a huge thank you to every single person (and canines!) who took part.
