RSYC NEW MEMBERS – MURIEL AND MARTIN HADLEY-BROWN
The sea has always played a part in our lives, and we have both loved the Hampshire and Dorset coastline since we were children, with many memories of happy family holidays.
We decided to rent a property in Hythe Marina Village in November last year, having moved in 1989 from Broadmayne near Dorchester to Norfolk, where Martin was
a GP partner for 30 years; and Muriel spent many years working as nurse and matron in care homes.
Martin’s love of water-based activities was inherited from his father, who was a dinghy sailor and taught him to sail in a Mirror on Poole Harbour. He rowed at school, kayaked alone and later with Muriel and then, in his 40’s took several sailing courses culminating in the RYA Yachtmaster. Sailing originally
in a 26ft wooden yacht, he and a friend then each bought a 1/3 share in our 30ft Bavaria yacht Lapwing, which was moored in Levington near Ipswich before moving to Universal on the Hamble about seven years ago.
Lapwing took up her new mooring in Hythe on a sunny, but cold, Christmas Day in 2020.We were spending the day alone,
as the younger family members were all working twelve hour shifts for the NHS on 25th, and we decided that moving her before the new ‘lockdown’ on 26th was probably a good idea, as trying to do it in early 2021 would prove difficult.
