A 16 knot northerly gave us a fantastic reach down to Fowey for a short visit and early departure to catch a weather window. The forecast wind didn’t materialise, the
sun shone and the sea turned into an oily, silky mirror. If ever there was a time for dolphins, this was it.To our amazement, just past Dodman Point, a pod of about 20 came into view, swam straight towards us and then played around the bow on the pressure wave. Our “I Spy Book of Fish” was well and truly ticked! Mooring availability in Falmouth proved a challenge and in the end we
opted for a visitor buoy in St Mawes as the weather turned inclement, thankfully from the North East and so we were reasonably sheltered.
The short trip to Helford proved lively with a leftover swell and we were glad
to pick up a visitor buoy off the ferry. Exploration of Frenchman’s Creek (made famous by Daphne du Maurier) in the sunshine showed the Helford off to its best. The Shipwrights Arms provided refreshment and sustenance for a thirsty and hungry crew. Back to Falmouth to sit out some weather and then a stay in Mylor to see friends and explore the river Fal was preparation for
our return East. Disappointingly the ever- changing weather made us postpone visiting the Isles of Scilly for another year. However, we had definitely seen plenty of marine wildlife and “The Salt Path” was read cover to cover! Time to head back to the Solent...
