STEPHEN PARRY
– REAR COMMODORE SAILING
It was with huge sadness that the Club learned of the sudden death of Stephen Parry, our Rear Commodore Sailing. He suffered a heart attack at home in the early hours of Friday 7th May 2021.
Stephen was in his second term as Rear Commodore Sailing and was destined to be a future Commodore. His time in the Club was marked by an energetic and effective contribution to racing and sailing. He grew our Race Management Team and racing activities.
He was liked and respected by all those who knew, met and worked with him,
and will be remembered for his honest cheerfulness and willingness to get stuck in and roll up his sleeves to do any job.
The Club was represented at Stephen’s funeral by Commodore; Bob Trimble, Captain of Racing, David Martin and Sailing Secretary, Lisa Topley.
An experienced yachtsman, Stephen
had taken retirement from a professional medical career in dental surgery at The Royal Hampshire County Hospital. He
also had very close links with Lee on the Solent Sailing Club where he had worked tirelessly and was aTrustee.Among many other responsibilities, he volunteered on several RYA committees and had served
as Southern Region Race Management Co-ordinator. He was active in many aspects of Solent sailing, contributing to SIRCOA, the SCRA and organising class and championship racing in his capacity as an RYA National Race Officer. Stephen led this Club’s contribution to Cowes Week where he was our representative on the Sailing Committee, and he and our team uniquely ran an autonomous grand-prix race area for sports boat classes.
Stephen was supported in all that he did by his wife Angela, a fellow member and Race Officer, and by his daughter and son-in-law. He was also a proud grandfather.
The Club is in discussion with his family about suitable ways to remember Stephen.
We will keep you informed about these and other ways to remember such an energetic, well liked and highly valued member of our Club.
