than just on the command tasks. Route selec- tion became less rational, one patrol attempt- ing and conquering a near vertical slope, whilst another became lost following a fence that ran from east to west when there was no such fence on the map. Walking became difficult, and short breaks became longer and longer as sleep came on suddenly. OCdt Baggley was seen cuddling a fence post, and OCdt Aldrich, a sleepy man at the best of times, learnt how to sleep whilst walking. At one point he awoke with a start, shouting ‘It’s happening again!’, before rather sheepishly continuing to walk.
For most people the end of the patrol came deep into the second night, arriving at their fin- ish points to discover that reveille would be at 0500hrs, leaving about 40 minutes to sleep after managing to wash under the pathetic showers and changing into clean clothes. Reveille came,

what will be our final climb of Ex LONG REACH. With dense cloud obscuring all moonlight, and a
light fog (appropriate for Halloween) clinging to the ridge, visibility is extremely poor. The ground grows steeper as we near the peak; so much so that some of our number resort to clamber- ing on all fours over the rain-soaked ridgeline.
