EX DANUBE CADET was a sea kayaking expedition to deliver training in basic sea kayaking and coastal navigation skills. It was
conducted from Lopud, Croatia over the period of the 12th – 18th August 2018.
After a relatively hassle-free journey from London to Dubrovnik we walked out into the oppressive heat of the Croatian summer. Our ferry to Lopud Island not being until early the following morning, we took the opportunity to conduct some sight- seeing of the Old City. The Game of Thrones fans in the party were extremely excited, as much of the series was filmed in the city.
When we eventually reached Lopud, we were given a tour around the waterfront by Marko, our
Later on in the week, we took the longer route back around the island. The increased distance certainly required more endurance and technical
ability than the shorter route, but the reward of finally circumventing the island was worth the additional effort and achieved a goal that we had set at the beginning of the week. Unfor- tunately, OCdt Sutton felt the effects of the sea on the final part of our jour- ney and became unwell quite sud- denly; once he was assessed to be
in no danger, he received assistance from Marko in the receipt of a tow back to shore. Once we returned to our side of the island, we conducted the final admin required to close down the expedition and went for a final dinner with our instructors where we could relax and discuss the events of the week. The summary of the week and everything that we had learnt was a great way to bring the training to a close.

local guide, and then settled into ing basics. We learnt how to get the kayak, move in all directions, and what would prove to be the most useful skill: how to capsize correctly.
On the third day the team were
eager to undertake our first real
excursion of the trip. The plan was
to begin the morning by kayaking
across to a neighbouring island to some natural caves, which Marko promised would be an inter- esting endeavour for the group. From the neigh- bouring island we kayaked around Lopud to the other side of the island, taking in the spectacu- lar scenery along the way. We were also given the opportunity to test our skills further out to sea and also closer to the rocky coast, which opened our eyes to a different dynamic of sea kayaking.
