Page 5 - Wish Stream Year of 2018
P. 5
Welcome to another edition of The Wish Stream! It is wonderful to report that Sandhurst continues to not only be full but exceeds the number of high-quality officers that we are required to send to the Field Army. This is testament to the hard work of all through- out the pipeline in terms of recruiting, selection and then working with the Officer Cadets to train, nurture and develop them to excel.
Turning to what you should expect from this edi- tion, you’ll be pleased to see that the high levels of activity of previous years have not only be sus- tained but if anything enhanced. There are some new impressions of the first five weeks and the shock of capture that that generates, with further articles on some of the other milestone exercises such as Allenby’s Advance, Long Reach, Nor- mandy Scholar and Slim’s Stand, to name but a few.
Adventurous training continues, with 560 cadets undertaking expeditions to over 17 countries. And of course, you’ll see many examples of sporting success both in the UK, such as victo- ries in the Regional Command Cross Country in the women’s U23 category, and overseas, such as the Hockey Tour to Australia, which included ANZAC day commemorations. We also saw our Officer Cadets take part in the Para 10 Chal- lenge, raising money for Combat Stress.
As for reputation, Sandhurst welcomed back ‘Officer Cadet’ Wales in December as the Sov- ereign’s Representative, this time HRH The Duke of Cambridge, following in the footsteps of his brother the previous year. We also welcomed President Donald Trump alongside Prime Minis- ter Theresa May, along with many other senior politicians and royals. The list of foreign heads of state who are Sandhurst Alumni has now increased to nine, with the crowning of His Maj- esty the King of Malaysia.
As we look back over the last year, we also see the beginnings of many of the next steps for Sand- hurst. You will find articles on activities such as advising TV production for Secret Agent Selec- tion to teaching conflict management in Chile and reflections on our continued involvement at

the Afghan National Army Officer Academy. We have also seen the role of Women continue to develop apace and looking forward to the next edition of The Wish Stream, I hope to be able to report on the first Women joining the Infantry. We are also working hard to widen the spread of the Sandhurst brand, allowing us to bring in more income to further help us deliver the very best training in world-class infrastructure.
The Sandhurst Trust have again excelled through their hard work and dedication, disbursing a record £105,000 during 2018 and running an outstanding 234 events. Additionally, grants have also been given for the first time to members of the Officer Training Corps and the Field Army, so you can look forward to some great articles on Royal Artillery snowboarding and skiing in the Fifth Fusiliers. But of course, their work does not just end with this and I would commend the his- torical section of this journal for some fascinating insights into some more “famous Fridays”.
I very much hope that you enjoy this edition of The Wish Stream.
