      Open Day at Aberystwyth
On Sunday 2nd July at Aberystwyth allotments, we welcomed a host of visitors from near and far to our open day as part of the National Garden Scheme.
The allotments are situated on the southern edge of Aberystwyth in a picturesque setting beside the tidal Afon Rheidol.
There are 47 plots in total on two adjacent sites with 40 plots at Fifth Avenue site and 7 plots at Caeffynnon site.
It was a lovely sunny day and visitors enjoyed strolling around the plots, meeting plotholders who were on hand to offer advice on the growing of fruit, vegetables, flowers to attract pollinators and companion planting to deter pests.
The allotmenteers very generously
gifted the visitors their surplus plants, fruit, vegetables and bunches of flowers and this goodwill continues as the allotments now have a stand outside the main entrance, where surplus produce is left for local residents to help themselves. All donations gratefully received.
The 2nd Penparcau Scouts set up camp on the car park and provided an excellent selection of refreshments which were much appreciated by the visitors on a glorious busy afternoon.
Our open day was a huge success, enjoyed by everyone, raising almost £450 for the National Garden Scheme, the scouts a further £120 and the happy visitors going home determined to join their nearest allotment group. We didn’t mention the waiting lists for allotments nationwide!!

  A Successful Event at
Leckwith Droves
Back in June I was invited to Leckwith Drove Allotment, to have a look around the 250 plot site with Gavin, the present site Chairperson.
The site is impressive with tarmac roads and various size plots available. Leckwith is home to no less than 5 community groups including Cwm Taf housing, beekeepers, Go Green and veterans. The allotment has no electricity or piped water and is run as a self-sufficient site with a very diverse cultural membership.
Gavin and I took part in a well organised
Q&A session which took place with different cultural groups and three members of the
Royal Horticultural Society. There were many questions from the members that attended, and the exchange of information was very well received. The overall event lasted around four hours with Chris handing out a box full of seeds, leaflets and membership forms to the members.
