Unravelling the Mystery of Expedition Grants
Kate Redfern, Grants Manager
Have you ever flicked through the journal and been envious of those on expeditions to far-flung destinations and thought ‘how did they get the funding to go there?’. Well, part of the answer is the AMA’s Memorial Fund. The fund was set up in 1975 following the tragic loss of five members of the Asso- ciation’s Nuptse expedition and is a permanent memorial to those five, and all other members of the Association that have died in tragic circumstances. This year a budget of £25,000 was allocated from the investment income made by the Memorial Fund to provide grants to British Army expeditions that support soldiers and officers to increase their mountaineering experience, and allow them to develop their mountaineering skills and judgement. This budget is split between grants to the AMA expeditions programme, meets programme, and grants to unit level expeditions.
How can I benefit from this funding?
If you want to benefit from some of this funding, there are several ways this can be done. You can apply to go on an AMA expedition or a meet, or better still, volunteer to organise an expedition or meet yourself. Al Mason, Vice-Chairman (Mountaineering), and Michael Daly the Meets Coordinator, are always looking for willing volunteers and are open to ideas. The other way to access this funding is through the Memorial Fund grants to unit level expeditions.
How can I receive a Memorial Fund grant for a unit level expedition?
To receive an AMA grant you must first be a member of the Association, the expedition must comprise ski mountaineer- ing, ice or rock climbing, trekking or mountaineering (summer, winter or alpine), and supported by an associated JSATF(A). The expedition leader will need to submit an application form to the membership secretary (secretary@armymountaineer. org.uk), which can be found in the AMA website at www. armymountaineer.org.uk (members area) or alternately on the Defence Connect AMA site.
How much is a Memorial Fund grant for a unit level expedition?
The annual budget for unit level expeditions is £10,000 and in recent years applications have not exceed this amount, even prior to the onset of covid. The amount an expedition could be granted is capped at 30% of the overall expedition cost, and is based on the number of AMA members on the expedition and the duration of an individual’s membership. The amount allocated for an individual who has been a member for more than 2 years is £150, 1-2 years is £100 and for one year or less is £50. So, if you have people on your expedition who are not members, it is well worth their while joining as annual membership is only £20.
What’s the catch?
The only catch is that, in return for the grant, the AMA requires a copy of the expedition PXR and an article with appropriate photographs for publication in the journal (within two months of the expedition). Only then can other members wonder how you got the funding to go to such a far-flung destination.
