Joint Service Mountain Training Wing (Ballachulish) delivers a vast amount of Adventurous Training, but specialising principally in the winter Joint Service Adventurous Training (JSAT) scheme. The Wing also delivers several concentrations in both the UK and overseas, this keeps the mixed staff of 5 military personnel and 8 civilians continually busy. In the last six months the Wing has undergone some incredible changes, such as a new classroom complete with state of the art resources and a fully equipped, two storey stores facility being established. In turn this meant our very own Store Keeper, Ms Annette Telford had to work very hard from an iso - container for the best part of six months in less than favourable weather conditions. The store was nally opened by Maj Gen ND Ashmore CB OBE on the 23 Nov 16.

many 3 star routes, the Wainstones is a ‘must visit’ crag. Some of the best Severe graded climbs are here, but it also boasts a large array of more dif cult climbs (too many to list). Brilliant anchors can be arranged at the top of each climb, making it a great area
to practice Rock Climbing Single Pitch Supervisor (RCS) skills. So when you’re next up at Joint Service Mountain Training Wing Ripon, try a less walked path; head North East and get rigged up for a great day climbing in the North York Moors.

It only seems like yesterday that Janette, Matthew and I made the journey south from the Scottish Highlands to North Wales and here I am again putting pen to paper for the next edition
of our Corps Journal as my tenure as OC JSMTW (I) draws to a close. Where has the time gone!
JSMTW Indefatigable is the largest Wing within in JSMTC with an 18 strong team comprising of both military and civilian personnel. During the last 12 months there have been a number of staff changes and we said farewell to WO2 (QMSI) Mat Fletcher and Sgt (SI) Rob Brown and extended a heartfelt welcome to WO2 (QMSI) Will Brant, Sgt (SI) Liam Mills and Sgt (SI) Kev Webster. On the promotion front congratulations to WO2 (QMSI) Will Brant and
Sgt (SI) Charlton on their selection for promotion; a fantastic achievement and thoroughly deserved.
By the time this article goes to print I will have handed over the reins to Capt (MAA) Chris Hames RAPTC and moved onto to pastures new at HQ RAPTC. Good luck Chris and I hope your tenure is as enjoyable and rewarding as mine. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the staff at JSMTW (I) for a fantastic and rewarding tenure as their OC. It has been an honour and privilege to command such a talented and dedicated team and I wish them all good luck for the future. To give you a taste of life within JSMTW (I) the RAPTCIs have prepared the following ‘snap shots’ of training and delivery they undertake.

Adventurous Training within the British military is regarded as a highly effective and cost ef cient way of developing leadership within the ranks. At the forefront of this leadership development is the Joint Services Mountain Training Centre, more speci cally Indefatigable Wing (I Wing) which is affectionately referred to as ‘Indy’. I Wing have seen a large turnover of RAPTC staff within the last 12 months. Due to the nature of courses running from the wing it is an ideal training and development ground for 1st tour RAPTC Adventurous Training Instructor’s. The new instructors learn their trade under the guidance of a highly quali ed and experienced team of both military and civilian instructors; they will then run courses, undertake professional development and be involved in the running of adventurous training concentrations. 2016 saw I wing delivering many such concentrations with instructors being deployed in the UK on the rock and surf kayaking concentrations, to the Alpine regions of Europe and Canada on the alpine, Canpaddle and Canice concentrations.
