This year 1 RHA Rugby Football Club has returned to a reg- ular drumbeat of training and matches following a hiatus whilst COVID-19 restrictions were in place. Determination and commitment by members of the club rallied our newer mem- bers and it was fantastic to see a full squad back on the rugby field again.
With an ever-busy period of exercises, deployments and courses, the rugby club organised its first fixture vs the Household Cavalry Regiment. We smashed this fixture out of the park with a 43-10 victory, despite a valiant effort by the HCR. Gnr Rakita of E Bty earnt man of the match.
This paved the way for many within the Regiment to represent the Gunners or Gunner Development squad. Many members of 1 RHA got their name on the team sheets; Gnrs Naivalu and Degei were regular members in the Gunner team, and Capt Miles cap- tained the Development squad with Gnrs Tawaketolu, Moroca and Tunstall alongside.
With cobwebs blown off the 15s season, it was onto rugby league and 7s. Players across the Regiment worked hard through many sweltering afternoons to ensure that 1 RHA was competitive this Summer. Competing in the HQ Southwest 7s tournament, reached the semi-finals with a 3-1 win-loss record; and in a rugby
league 9’s tournament, the team came narrowly second losing to 3RHA in the final.
Sgt Tovagone of E Battery has been integral to the success of 1 RHA’s rugby club. Utilising his coaching qualifications and rugby experience he has guided the collection of individually talented players into a functioning team, and we have performed well as a result.
The Regimental rugby club has grown strong this year, this is down to the hard work and determination of all of our players. We look forward to another great season in the year ahead, developing fit- ness, leadership and teamwork on and off the pitch.
