HULL CIVIC
PARADE
By Captain Neil Bizzell
In July the Lord Mayor and Admiral of the Humber, Councillor Kalvin Neal, held his Civic Service at Hull Minster. The Civic Procession before the service was led by the County Band and Corps of Drums, this year playing a leading role, together with a large body of cadets from A Company; setting off from The Guild Hall playing rousing marches along the short route to Hull Minster where the service took place.
The Cadet contingent were followed by the Lord Mayor in robes of state, his Lady Mayoress, the Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding of Yorkshire, the full Council, representatives from the surrounding towns, military personnel, veterans, Hull Trinity House Academy, and representatives from key community organisations.
Once the parade arrived at Hull Minster the procession entered and the service began. After the service the procession headed back to The Guild Hall, again led by the Band and Corps of Drums.
At the Guild Hall the Lord Mayor addressed guests before a civic reception with afternoon tea.
Once the guests had eaten the Commandant, Colonel Fred Owen, made a brief address then the Lord Mayor, who is also a serving reservist with
4 YORKS, made some presentations to cadets, including Cadet Lance Corporal Cecily Chester being presented with her Four Star certificate and Cadet Corporal Zoe Crowther was promoted to Cadet
Sergeant.
Investing in Leadership
IOT and JCIC successes
By Captain Neil Bizzell
During May we had Adult Volunteers and cadets developing their leadership and instruction skills on the Initial Officer Training (IOT) and Junior Cadet Instructors Cadre (JCIC) courses.
Second Lieutenant (2Lt) Andy Mead, County Music Officer, was at Sandhurst completing the Applied Leadership course. 2Lt Mead has served the county force for quite some time most recently as a Sergeant Major Instructor so is not a newcomer to leadership, having led the County Band for a number of years. Despite this he welcomed the chance to receive the free leadership training offered as part of the IOT programme.
The Applied Leadership course is the second of two courses that provide high quality leadership training to our volunteers who are selected for a Cadet Forces Commission during the two year probationary period. These courses hone the leadership skills of new officers and prepare them for the responsibility of command. Having completed the course 2Lt Mead has now completed the requirements of his probation and will be eligible for promotion.
At a much earlier stage in their leadership journey cadets from C and D Companies came together on the JCIC at Scarbrough Barracks. The JCIC is the first course introducing cadets to instruction and leadership. For many this will be
their first experience of delivering training. After receiving instruction
on the Cadet Force Instruction Technique the course culminates
in each cadet delivering a lesson showing what they have learnt.
The weekend saw a new batch of instructors successfully take their first steps in instruction and leadership.
