HILL 23 Pte Malcolm ‘Casey’
of Rowley Regis died on 28 August 2014 aged 74. He enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment in 1961 and served with 1 Worc R in Minden, Lydd and Gibraltar until discharged in 1967. He was a regular
and popular presence at the Reunion at Worcester.
GRANT Alfred Frederick 4978330
Of Derby on 1 January 2014 aged 93. He enlisted into the 2nd Battalion, The Sherwood Foresters in October 1939 and served throughout WW2. He was a member of the
BEF and was evacuated out through Dunkirk. He served in UK, North Africa and took part in the Anzio Beachhead landings, Italy. He also served in Palestine. After demobilisation in February 1946 he became a Dyers Operative.
GRICE Albert WO2 5732344
Of Kidderminster on 5 January 2014 aged 89. He enlisted in the Devon and Dorset Regiment before transferring to the Worcester Regiment and served with C Coy 1 WORC R in Iserlohn
and British Guyana and Jamaica. In 1947 he left the Regular Army and became a TA soldier. In 1952 he rejoined 1 WORC R. In 1959 he was posted as PSI 7 WORC R in Kidderminster and was then promoted to WO2 in August 1960. He returned to the 1st Battalion in 1962. In 1963 he received his long service and good conduct award and was discharged in 1966. Albert was
a very quiet but effective Warrant Officer. He then took up employment in the steel industry and worked for Miles Druce, GKN Steelstock, later he became office manager at Smith Druce in Stourbridge.
HENTON John Barry ‘Tracker’ A/Capt 451261
Of Merton, Oxfordshire on 31 December 2013 aged 78. Tracker was commissioned into the 1st Battalion, The Sherwood Foresters in October 1956 and served in Malaya as OC Tracker Platoon in 1959, before being posted in 1960 to the Depot Staff in Derby. He left the Army in 1962.
LAMBERT Arthur John CSgt 22946146
Of Kidderminster died on 13 July 2014. He enlisted in December 1953 and after basic training at Norton Barracks joined 1 Worc
R in Bulford. He rose rapidly in rank to Sgt, served in Iserlohn, the West Indies, at Depot Lichfield, in Tobruk, Gibraltar, N Ireland,
Berlin and Hemer. His final posting was an extended tour as a PSI at Kidderminster. He was discharged in 1982 after 29 years service. He was a member of the 1 Worc R Bisley team for some years and coached the Mercian Volunteers team to win the China Cup in 1980.
LENCH Edward James Pte 5253920
Of Birchen Coppice, Kidderminster on 10 December 2013 aged 95. He was called up for service in 1939 and after completing his training
at Norton Barracks
he joined 7 WORC R. In 1941 he transferred to the Royal
Engineers. He was then posted to France and evacuated through Le Havre and after a short time in UK was posted back again across the Channel. In 1946 transferred to the Reserve and returned to Kidderminster where he took up employment with IMI Summerfield, where he was involved in
the development and design of explosive charges for rocket motors for Sidewinder missiles. Later he gained employment with the Woodward Grosvenor Carpet Company.
MILLS Ronald Frederick Pte 19190472
Of Derby on 13 December 2013 aged
84. He enlisted into the General Service Corps in July 1947 and after completing his training in Elgin, Scotland he was posted
a month later in The Sherwood Foresters. In January 1948 he was posted to the Lincolnshire Regiment and was deployed to Palestine. In August 1949 he was discharged to the Reserve.
MORTIMER John Gerald 2Lt
Of Ilkeston, Derbyshire on 30 December
2013 aged 77. On the 29 September 1955
he was called up for National Service into the Sherwood Foresters and completed his
basic training at Normanton Barracks, in October he moved to Budbrook Barracks, Warwickshire. He took up a commission
in July 1956, moved to OCTU Eaton Hall and was posted to the 1st Battalion in Sennelager until September 1957. After demobilisation he became an English Teacher at Yarlet Hall School, Stafford and later Heversham Grammar School and various schools throughout Lancashire and Yorkshire. In July 1970 he became a Sports Journalist with the Derby Evening Telegraph he then became Editor in 1973 and Chief Sports Reporter. He retired in 2002.
NORMAN Alan G OBE TD Lt Col
Of Guildford, Surrey on 21 February 2014 aged 90. In 1942 Alan was commissioned into the Royal Armoured Corps, he was then posted to the Royal Hampshire Regiment and with it
he landed in Normandy on D Day where he was wounded twice and returned to England. It was whilst convalescing that he met a young nurse who was later to become his wife. In 1945 he returned
to the Battalion and was demobilised shortly after the war ended. He took up civilian employment as an engineer in Nottingham and in 1947 he joined the Sherwood Foresters. He went on to command the 5th/8th Battalion and then the Nottinghamshire (Territorial) Battalion The Sherwood Foresters until relocation forced him to move to Sussex and then Leicester. It was in Leicestershire that he joined the Ratby British Legion and became their Chairman.
PEARSON Peter Pte 4987654
Of Worksop on 12 January 2014 aged
90. He enlisted into the 2nd/5th Battalion The Sherwood Foresters
on 18 June 1942 and joined HQ Coy Sigs in North Africa and served
through Tunisia, Italy, Greece and Austria before he transferred in March 1946 to The Loyal Regiment. After demobilisation Peter worked as a painter and decorator until he retired.
REYNOLDS Albert John Pte 14903403
Of Gosport died on 18 February 2014. After basic training at Norton Barracks he served in Burma before discharge on 8 September 1947.
ROWLEY Major FA CMG OBE MC
Died on 28 July 2014 aged 92. He enlisted in 8 Worc R as a boy in 1938, transferred to 10 Worc R in 1940 as QM’s clerk and was sent to India for officer cadet training in 1942. On being commissioned in July he served with 5/10 Baluch Regiment on the North West Frontier and was commanding a company as a major when the battalion entered Burma in 1944. He was awarded the MC in February 1945 for leading his company with dash and skill to overrun a Japanese position, which was holding up the brigade advance. He was seriously wounded in April and on recovering spent the next two years in staff appointments
in the Far East. He joined 1 Worc R briefly as a company commander during the Berlin Airlift but, having been medically downgraded because of his wound, he left the army and joined MI6 where he had a highly successful career, mainly in the
